TORRINGTON — State and local health officials on Wednesday studied graphs showing a sharp spike in swine flu that dates to last week, the first sign that the second of three expected waves has arrived.

The second wave, which officially began following the end of the first wave of H1N1 infection in August, has claimed three lives, including a Litchfield County resident between the ages of 50 and 64 who suffered from other health problems. That fatality was reported to federal officials Tuesday; state Department of Public Health spokesman William Gerrish said a third death, in New London County, was reported to the state Wednesday.
Each wave is expected to last roughly six to 12 weeks, and Gerrish said the vast majority of victims recover at home. Torrington Area Health District See FLU , Page 5A
